The following is a message to the Earlham community from President's Cabinet in response to the Trump Administration announcement on September 5, 2017, that it will rescind, in six months, the 2012 executive order which established the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
DACA allows registered participants who were brought to the U.S. as children to enroll in college, obtain driver’s licenses, and legally secure jobs. Uncertainty about DACA remains. Absent Congressional action, DACA students will lose protections, become subject to deportation, have their movements restricted, and will no longer be able to re-enter the country should they leave. These would be very real impacts for DACA students and for all of us in the Earlham community.
September 5, 2017
All of us on the president's cabinet are very aware that the Trump Administration’s plan to rescind DACA has left many in our community worried and wondering how the College will respond to this change in U.S. Government policy. Our primary focus is always the safety and welfare of students and employees of the College. We value all members of this community, we value diversity and inclusion, and must do all we can to nurture and support one another in times of uncertainty and fear. To that end, we are writing to underscore and clarify how Earlham will respond to this announced change in immigration enforcement:
Students: if you have questions or concerns, please contact the Student Life Office.
Employees: we encourage you to bring your questions and concerns to any member of the President's Cabinet.
If you want to know more about how one college president thinks about these and related issues, please attend the Convocation on September 20, where Alan Price will ask and attempt to answer the question, “What is our ethical responsibility when we see injustice?”
As we go through this time of uncertainty, let us remember to support one other and try our best to live those ideals which have brought us together.
